If you walk down the cereal isle of any supermarket it is usually a sea of health promises, bright colours and well known cartoon characters – It can be really difficult for parents to decipher what is really healthy and what’s just a gimmick!
Unfortunately a lot of cereals targeting kids are pretty much confectionary disguised in a cereal box. It can be difficult to navigate through the different boxes trying to find the best choice- The majority are either too salty or too sugary, void of fibre and other essential nutrients or all of the above! to be recommended for every day.
Studies have found that children given low-sugar cereal ate the cereal in appropriate amounts, and even when allowed to add table sugar, consumed less sugar overall compared to children given highly-sweetened cereals (who ate twice the recommended serving size). Children liked their cereal equally whether it was highly sugared or not.
This got the Schmoosli team thinking… how can we make a healthy cereal;, high in fibre, low in sugar and sodium and rich in other nutrients, while enticing the kids out there to give it a try? The answer… a sprinkling of dark choc chips. After speaking to lots of parents out there we found that by adding a ‘little treat to the cereal, kids were more likely to show some interest.
